Is it necessary to pay hundreds, even thousands of dollars for one of those big-name online marketing courses? Maybe not. There are plenty of high-quality, free programs out there that will get you beyond the basics. You should, however, work through all of these tutorials and courses before you design your campaign so that you have a better understanding of your options.

Google Digital Garage

Google’s online course, Digital Garage, gives you a broad overview on how to market a small business online. It offers short videos and quizzes on topics including establishing your presence, search engine optimization and setting up e-commerce functionality. Of course, it is as much a feeder for Google’s products as it is a free course, but to succeed online, you need to know and understand what the big players are offering, so that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Facebook Blueprint

Unlike Google Digital Garage, Facebook Blueprint is not an overview of digital marketing in general. Instead, it’s a course on how to use Facebook’s advertising system. Over 50 courses cover the basics, from setting up ads to targeting custom demographics. The course is flexible, so you can jump around between different modules as much as you like. All you need to get started is a Facebook account.

Twitter Flight School

Twitter’s Flight School program is designed to help you get your business noticed by its 330 million-plus users. The course consists of modules, each of which takes between 10 and 15 minutes to complete. These modules start with the basics of what Twitter is and how it works, and the progress to “Deep Dive” topics like integrating a Twitter campaign with TV advertising.

Hubspot

Hubspot is more like Google Digital Garage in that it gives you a broad overview of digital marketing in general, rather than proficiency with a particular tool. There are separate courses you can take including Inbound Marketing, Email Marketing, Content Marketing and Marketing Software. These take between 1.5 to 6.5 hours each to complete according to Hubspot’s estimates, and as always you get a certification at the end.

For Beginners and Experts Alike

It will take some time to go through these courses, but the knowledge you gain will be worth it. They are excellent for beginners, but experts should consider them too. Not only will they serve as refresher courses, but you’ll also get to display your certificates on your website to help build trust and authority.
